This is one of my favorite DIY's because it's SO EASY, you don't even need a saw and it can make so much difference. I recently added an accent wall to our primary bedroom, and it only took about a weekend to do, painting took the most amount of time. Steps are below:
Paint the walls. I used Rock Bottom by SW; my walls have heavy texture so it took 2 coats and touch ups. If you followed my dining room DIY, I skim coated the walls before adding the paint and molding; this is preference. I wanted the dining room to look more high end and formal for an accent wall behind my bed I didn't care if the texture was still there.
Next, cut your PVC. Normally, I get mine from Lowe's and cut it to size; however, Etsy has some pre-cut and usually it's more expensive but I found a sale so I just bought them through Etsy pre-cut.
If I used the PVC from Lowe's you would need to cut it to size to make the boxes. You can do this with a miter saw or miter shears, I usually use the shears because you don't have to run back and forth to the garage and I did this project in the summer and it was HOT.
Start attaching the trim to your wall. You'll want to use a level to make sure it's straight and nail it in with a brad nailer. I usually do 1 or 2 nails first until I have the rest of the trim up to make the box. Then, once I'm sure it's an equal square, I secure it to the wall with more nails.
After, you've finished your design, caulk everywhere the trim meets the walls and fill the nail holes with a little caulk as well. I wipe all the caulk down with a baby wipe while it's still wet to ensure it dries smooth.
Lastly, paint the trim. I use a foam brush for painting the trim but you can use any kind.
