Wine Fridge Built-ins

If you know me at all, you know I hate to see clutter on counters and that I love wine. I was searching for a sideboard to put right across from the kitchen for toy storage. The niche I was trying to fill was about 108 in wide and I couldn't find one I loved in that length without paying a hefty price tag. I decided I would do built-ins instead. I figured 108 inches of just cabinets wouldn't be eye-appealing and it's always been my dream to have an under-cabinet wine bar in my house, so I decided to make it happen. This project was fairly easy, the hardest part was figuring out the design I wanted. The niche on the one side is about 28 inches wide. I figured having all of the cabinets stick out that much would eat up so much space and I didn't want that so I decided on a C shape.

First I bought my wine fridge so I could customize the cabinets to that. I bought the Tittla wine fridge which measured 23 in deep, 14.9 in wide and 33.4 in tall. With those measurements, I bought 4 prefabricated cabinets from Home Depot. Three were 30 inches wide and one was 15 inches wide. The smaller cabinet will sit on the end opposite from the wine fridge to create the C shape.

The first step was to line all my cabinets up to ensure they fit. Then I built a base for the cabinets using 2x4's. You want to save room in the front for a 1x3 trim piece to make it all look pretty since a 2X4 is not finished wood. I had an electrician to come out to move one of my outlets above the cabinets and I left the other one alone so the wine fridge could plug in.

I didn't want my cabinets to sit flush to the wall, so using spare 2x4's I extended the studs from the wall and attached them to the cabinets. For the 15 inch cabinet, I extended the studs a little longer to create the C shape and ensure it was straight with the wine fridge.

Now that the cabinets are attached to the base and the wall, I had to create trim pieces on either side to fill in the gaps. I used my table saw (for the first time) to cut down spare plywood to create the trim for the sides. I then took out a chunk of my baseboards with my multi-tool to slide the plywood in. I screwed the plywood to the inside of the cabinet on the one side and for the side with the wine fridge I added a couple of small 2x4's to act as braces it can attach to.

Once everything was in place, I wood filled and sanded. Initially, I wanted to stain it but that ended up looking rough so I painted it Iron Ore by SW. They looked amazing at this point and because of the length of the cabinets I didn't trust myself to make a countertop. I HATE working with plywood and I didn't want to mess up what I had built by making a cheap looking countertop so I hired a professional to build and install one. After that, I sanded and stained the top, filled the cabinets with toys and the wine fridge with wine and voila!
